    Dasgupta: PM stirred row

Maintaining that the PM had asked for consensus but provoked controversy, CPI’s Gurudas Dasgupta said the PM should not have used the rostrum to deliver a progress report with next year’s Assembly elections in five States. He asked whether the MPs were under duress in legislating the law and alleged that the PM used rhetoric in his speech. Attacking Hazare, Dasgupta said “too much importance” is being given to one individual, which will not help democracy to function.

He dubbed the Lokpal Bill as a “cosmetic operation” when “every limb of the State apparatus was infected with cancer and required a surgery”. Dasgupta said he was moving an amendment seeking inclusion of corporates under the ambit of Lokpal as they bribe politicians, Ministers and bureaucrats, and fund election campaigns.
