Kalyan Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress, an important ally of the UPA Government, attacked the Government for trying in an indirect manner to make it mandatory for the States to legislate Lokayuktas. Criticising the selection process of the Lokpal, he suggested that the body should be selected by the House itself as judges are appointed by the House in the US.
He wanted the accountability of Lokpal to be fixed and asked the Government not to bring the Bill under pressure from Team Anna. In a criticism of the Government for saying that several State Governments had not created Lokayuktas, he said if the Centre had not brought Lokpal Bill for passage earlier, it does not mean that the previous Governments were corrupt.
