    Honour killing: 27-yr-old shot dead in Meerut
    In yet another case of honour killing reported from Meerut district, a 27-year-old youth was shot dead by family members of the girl. The youth identified as Devendra Sharma was in a relationship with Sarita (25) for the last nine years.

    Devendra was gunned down on the first day of the New Year in the Inchauli area that is situated at a distance of 15 kms from Meerut city. Sarita too received bullet injuries and is reported to be battling for life in the Meerut Medical College. Devendra and Sarita were punished because Sarita's family was fiercely opposed to her relationship with Sharma.

    Meerut police officials said that Davendra and Sarita were in involved in a serious relationship since 2002. In the year 2004, Sarita's parents had lodged a complaint with the Inchauli police alleging that Davendra had eloped with their daughter. The police managed to trace the couple but Sarita deposed in Devendra's favour. She accused her family for falsely implicating him and she then told the court that she wanted to live with him forever. Interestingly Devendra and Sarita belonged to the Dalit community, yet girl's family was against her liaison with Devendra.

    It is alleged that Sarita was forcible married to one Ghanshyam, a resident of Jatav Gate Meerut. Sarita gave birth to a girl child. Sraita however continued to maintain her relationship with Devendra. The incident took place on January 1st of this year when Sarita's family members saw her engrossed in a conversation with Devendra at the gate of his village. “Three brothers of Sarita along with four of their relatives attacked Davendra and Sarita with fire arms. The villagers rushed both the victims to nearby Sushila Jaswant Rai Hospital where doctors declared Devendra brought dead. He had sustained three bullet injuries on his chest and abdomen. Sarita also sustained two bullet injuries. She was referred to Meerut Medical College for treatment,” said Rajiv Krishna the Inspector General of Police, Meerut Range.
