Tech snag traps 100 cars at Sarojini Nagar parking
The city’s first technology-based state-of-art parking in Sarojini Nagar inaugurated recently developed a technical snag leaving nearly 100 cars trapped inside the parking complex on Friday. With the collapse of the computer server controlling the entire parking, users of the facility had a bitter experience and had to wait for more than two hours until their vehicles were manually taken out. It was complete chaos outside at the site. People had queued up outside the first multi-level automatic parking lot.
Developed in public-private partnership mode between the New Delhi Municipal Council and DLF, the eight-level “South Square” car park was inaugurated jointly by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dik**** and Union Minister of Urban Development Kamal Nath in November. Built at an estimated cost of `80 crore, the automated parking was expected to ease the parking woes of the busy Sarojini Nagar market with a parking capacity of 824 vehicles.
“The server failed in the evening which led to the collapse of the entire system and users were not able to get back their vehicle. Cars had to be pulled out manually with the help of crane,” said Rajeev Sharma who had gone to the market with his friend. He further said that his friend had left his car in the evening at the parking but when he reached there to get back, the system was not working.
“The attendant there informed that the system had failed and cars were trapped inside. Technician made several efforts to restore the server but all went in vain. After that vehicles were retrieved manually with the help of cranes,” he added.
The automated parking lot has car lifts, pallets and computerised control systems that would be operational round-the-clock. People can use the parking by buying a ‘car park card’, drive into the facility and leave the car at the basement, from where it will be automatically taken to the parking area. A senior official of the NDMC said, “The NDMC is trying to sort out the issue. We are talking to the representatives of the company in Pune through video conferencing. We are hopful to get it rectified as soon as possible,” said the official.
