This is the second accident during the last 15 days in which a DTC bus has been involved in a fatal accident. On December 19, a 54-year-old woman and her granddaughter were crushed to death by a speeding DTC bus. The accident took place on Asaf Ali Marg in central district. The deceased Krishna (54) was walking near the pavement with Alice (13), when a DTC bus hit them from behind and they were crushed under its wheels.
The accidents involving DTC buses have risen by 65 per cent this year. Till December 15 this year, DTC buses have caused 79 fatal accidents, killing 80 people. Last year, the number was 49 deaths in 48 accidents.
According to Delhi Police, 6,436 DTC bus drivers have been prosecuted already this year out of which 1,183 have been found driving without license. Five DTC bus drivers were booked till December 15 this year for drunken driving.
While the drivers have been continually erring, DTC has launched a special checking drive to monitor the bus service and have an eye on bus crew behaviour and their duties. On Wednesday, 1,201 buses were checked and there has been a remarkable improvement in all spheres such as over speeding, rash driving, overtaking, non stoppage of buses on bus stop and improper parking etc., since only a few cases have been reported in these categories. A total of 86 cases of being without uniform and 98 cases of poor ‘presentability of bus’ were also reported by the checking officers/officials for which necessary steps are being taken by the Controlling Officers.
