    Auto cos report higher sales in December
    Despite continuing problems of high interest rates and fuel prices carmakers reported increase in their sales figures in December on the back of discounts.

    Though country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India’s sales declined for the seventh consecutive month as the company reported 7.1 per cent fall in December to 92,161 units as against 99,225 units, its arch rival Hyundai Motor announced 3.6 per cent jump in total sales to 48,949 units in December, 2011.

    MSI’s exports, however, jumped by 50.5 per cent in December, 2011, to 14,686 units from 9,756 units in the year-ago period. Hyundai’s domestic sales increased by 12.8 per cent to 29,516 units from 26,168 units in the same month last year. However, exports of the company decreased by 7.7 per cent to 19,433 units during the month under review from 21,060 units in the year-ago period, the statement said.

    Tata Motors’ sales in last month went up by 46.79 per cent to 28,916 units from 19,699 units in the same month previous year.

    Another auto maker Mahindra & Mahindra’s domestic passenger vehicle sales increased by 23.97 per cent to 19,341 units from 15,601 units in the year-ago period. Toyota Kirloskar Motor witnessed its sales increasing by over two-fold to 15,948 units from 6,362 units in the same month previous year.

    General Motors India reported an increase of 6.74 per cent in sales for December 2011 at 9,039 units compared to 8,468 units in the same month of the previous year .

    “We have been able to sustain the growth primarily due to the encouraging response to Chevrolet Beat. Other carlines like Spark, Cruze and Tavera have also generated substantial volumes for the company,” GM India Vice President P Balendran said. Another US Carmaker Ford India announced 39 per cent jump in sales for December, 2011, to 5,979 units as against 4,301 units in the corresponding month of the 2010.

    “It’s incredibly gratifying to see that our domestic sales have grown at such a steady pace, particularly given the challenging market environment,” Ford India President and Managing Director Michael Boneham said.

    Japanes carmaker Nissan Motor reported a jump of 44.57 per cent in its total sales for December, 2011 at 1,596 units compared to 1,104 units last Dedember. “With the launch of the Sunny diesel variant, we are on track to achieve the targeted sales performance despite the difficult market conditions in India,” Nissan Motor India Managing Director Kiminobu Tokuyama said.

    Luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz India reported 2.82 per cent rise in its sales for December 2011 at 730 units. The company had sold 710 units during the corresponding month previous year. Mercedes-Benz India Director (Marketing and Sales) Debashis Mitra said, “”This is a very good number and we are very happy with it. All the segments contributed almost equally in achieving this robust growth,” Mitra said.

    Country’s largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp reported sales of 5,40,276 units in December, 2011, registering a jump of 7.8 per cent over year-ago period, while Bajaj Auto sold 3,05,690 vehicles in December as against 374,477 units in previous month registering a fall of 18.4 per cent. “Going forward, we intend to further consolidate our leadership position with new launches combined with focused communication and network expansion,” Hero MotoCorp Senior Vice-President (Marketing and Sales) Anil Dua said in a statement.

    Chennai-based two-wheeler maker TVS Motor Company reported a marginal fall in total vehicle sales for December 2011 at 1,70,428 units. The company had sold 1,71,790 units in the same month previous year, TVS Motor Company said in a statement.
