    Bajaj unveils its four-wheeler RE60

Bajaj Auto on Tuesday unveiled its four-wheeler RE60 which could initially be sold in overseas markets where its three-wheelers are exported.

Bajaj Auto had showcased its concept small car ULC in 2008 just a few days before the Auto Expo and had then said it would develop the car in association with Renault and Nissan.

But later the company decided not to persue the small car project and developed on its own a new product named RE60, which will be launched later this year. RE60 is powered by a 200 cc rear mounted petrol engine

“Certainly, this is a product, the core customer for which are those who use a three wheeler,” said Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL) Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj.

“The product could initially be exported to our neighbouring countries particularly Sri Lanka, where people use three-wheeler in personal capacity,” added Bajaj.

Bajaj said it is the greenest of cars and the company took almost four years to deveop this product which has a top speed of 70 kmph with a highest mileage of 35kmpl.

"This vehicle has been designed for intra-city passenger transport keeping in mind intra-city duty cycles and safety requirements," he added.

When asked about when the product will be launched and also what is the potential, Bajaj said: “Production will start in the next a few months and we expect a big growth opportunity by targeting the three wheeler segment in and outside India.

Asked about the association with Renault-Nissan alliance, Bajaj said: "They have not seen the product yet and will be seeing it at the Auto-Expo. Once they see it, we will decide the way forward."

As per an agreement with the Renault-Nissan alliance, Bajaj Auto was supposed to develop and manufacture the vehicle and sold under the badge of the alliance.

Bajaj was categorical in saying that said if the Renault-Nissan alliance wants they can choose and BAL can manufacture the RE60 with design modifications to sell under their brand. "They have not seen the product yet. They have seen only on virtual media. They will see it in Auto-Expo. If they are disinterested in the four wheeler they are free to walk away," Bajaj said.
