Fiat developing India specific small car: Kapoor
Italian carmaker Fiat, which is still struggling to get competitive sales in Indian car market, is developing India specific Italian car in the sub Punto level.
“We need a product in the volume segment so that we can become a prominent player in the Indian car market. Keeping that in mind we are developing a India specific car which will be in the volume segment,” said FIAT India Automobiles President & CEO Rajeev Kapoor.
“A prototype was made and we tested that. After getting the feedback we are now working on a new car,” added Kapoor.
When asked what is the timeline for the proposed B -C segment car, Kapoor said,” I can’t give you the timeline as it is in the process but I can say that the product would be a Italian one with Indian specific features.
Real volumes comes from small car sgement in the country as almost 70 per cent of total cars are sold in India are in the small car segment and every carmaker worth the name wants to be in the same segment. Keeping probably that in mind Fiat is developing India specific volume car.
The company on Tuesday launched upgraded versions of its existing Linea and Punto models and said it planned to set up 22 exclusive showrooms for Fiat cars in big cities this year.
“The target for 2012 is to open 22 dedicated Fiat showrooms in agreement with Tata. The focus this year is to expand our dealership network across India,” said Kapoor.
He added that some of the company's existing dealers operating showrooms that sell Tata and Fiat cars under one roof would open Fiat exclusive outlets during the course of the year.
The new Punto models are priced between Rs 4.81 lakh and Rs 6.71 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and the Linea models will come with a price tag of Rs 6.83 lakh to Rs 9.18 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
