‘Identity crisis’ triggers exodus from UKD-D
At least 150 members, including the Central Working Committee president, office bearers and activists of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal-Democratic, have resigned from membership. Some of them will contest the Assembly election as Independent candidates.
According to Lakshman Singh Chufal, the UKD-D Central Working Committee president, party president Diwakar Bhatt’s decision to contest the election on the BJP symbol has effectively dissolved the identity of the party due to which 150 members including him have resigned from membership of the party.
Chufal said various factors led to the resignation of the party office bearers. “Diwakar Bhatt took the decision on the alliance with the BJP without the approval of the party’s working committee. This was not right on his part. He not only surrendered the identity of the party but also acted against the policies of the party by agreeing to contest the election on the BJP symbol, effectively closing the door to all except two party leaders to contest the polls,” he said.
Chufal further said that the UKD-D had announced a list of 21 candidates for the coming Assembly election. Bhatt had directed the candidates to start campaigning for the party and following the allotment of the ‘kite’ as election symbol of the party, the candidates had spent at least Rs two lakh on publicity material.
“Hence Bhatt’s refusal to allow these candidates to contest the elections is clearly unjust,” Chufal said.
