Impose deterrent punishment for road mishaps: SC
Expressing concern over increasing rate of fatal road accidents in the country, the Supreme Court on Friday ruled that deterrent punishment should be awarded to the drivers responsible for causing such mishaps.
A bench of justices P Sathasivam and J Chelameshwar passed the ruling while enhancing the punishment to six months RI for two bus drivers — Balwinder Singh and another — for causing the death of five persons after their vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on October 30, 1992 in Punjab.
The bench reversed a Punjab High Court judgement which reduced the punishment of two years imposed by the trial court to the period already undergone (15 days), although it enhanced the fine amount to Rs 25,000 each on the drivers.
