Palm oil case: Vigilance exonerates Kerala CM
The Kerala Vigilance on Saturday told a court in Thrissur that it had not been able to find any evidence to name Chief Minister Oommen Chandy as an accused in the sensational palm oil import case. The Vigilance gave the clean chit to Chandy in the 89-page report of its follow-up probe into the controversial deal which it submitted in the Special Vigilance Court in Thrissur on Saturday. But the Opposition pooh-poohed Chandy’s exoneration saying the Vigilance functioning under his Government could not have submitted a different report.
The report said that Chandy, as Finance Minister in the then K Karunakaran Government in 1992, had not indulged in any kind of conspiracy but had only endorsed the decision of the Cabinet to import palm oil from Malaysia. It said that Chandy had not done anything that could result in undue advantages for the palm oil importer.
The report, prepared by SP (Vigilance) VN Sasidharan, said that though several officials had been involved in suspicious moves over the import, Chandy had no role in such matters. The follow-up probe into the deal was held following an order by the Special Vigilance Court in Thiruvananthapuram to specifically inquire about any role of Chandy.
