Gender crime by relatives unabated
The latest data presented by the Delhi police reveals a shocking fact about rape and molestation cases in the Capital. In 97 per cent of the cases, the accused is a close aquaintance of the victim. The involvement of close aquaintances has dominated the scene with the number of rape and molestation cases rising in 2011 as compared to the cases in 2010.
In 2011, 568 rape cases have been recorded as compared to 507 cases in 2010. Cases of molestation have also increased, 653 cases of molestation have been recorded this year as compared to 601 cases last year. This clearly shows that women in Delhi have a greater threat from their own people.
Only in 2.6 per cent of the rape cases, the accused is a stranger; in rest of the 97 cases a close aquaintance is involved. Termed as ‘opportunistic crime’, such cases have dominated the crime scene this year. Out of the accused invoilved in rape cases, 58.28 per cent were relatives, 2.8 per cent were neighbours and 36.44 per cent were neighbours. Most of these people are first-timers who knew the victims beforehand.
The number of strangers involved in the crime has, in fact, declined in 2011. In 2010, 3.94 per cent strangers were involved in rape cases, whereas the number has declined to 2.46 per cent in 2011. Delhi police boasts of solving 95.41 per cent cases of molestation. There have been constant attempts by the police to provide woman-friendly policing.
