Auto Expo leads to massive traffic snarls
Unplanned diversion of traffic movement brought the city to a halt particularly in central and New Delhi district areas on Friday. Mismanagement of Delhi traffic police over VVIP movement and the ongoing Auto Expo at Pragati Maidan caused massive jams on all major arterial roads in central and New Delhi districts on Friday. Unrelenting traffic snarls and honking horns were a common sight at India Gate circle and Connaught Place circle and adjoining places. The chaos was so much that at around 7 pm it took almost an hour to cover the distance between ITO Redlight to Delhi Gate- the entire stretch of BSZ Marg.
Vehicular movement on all roads connected to India Gate circle including Tilak Marg, Copernicus Marg, Curzon Road, Ashoka Road, Akbar Road, Prithviraj Road, Pandara Road, Sher Shah Road and Purana Quila Road had come to a stand still. Traffic jams were also reported at Lodhi Colony, Punjabi Bagh and Netaji Subhash Place. The traffic jam occurred at the peak evening hours. Traffic helpline number was flooded with innumerous complaints 4 pm onwards. The meeting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Trininad and Tobago counterpart Kamla Persad-Bissessar at Hyderabad House in the evening also added to the problem at India Gate as vehicular movement was stopped for VVIP movement.
A senior Delhi Traffic Police official said, “There was a VVIP movement on Friday evening. On security grounds, vehicular movement had to be stopped on important roads without any prior warning. This caused massive traffic snarls in the city.”
The Auto-Expo event at Pragati Maidan added to the traffic mess on Friday. On the second day of the seven-day-long event, traffic movement remained affected during office hours on Friday. While movement of vehicles was slow on Vikas Marg, Mathura Road, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Sikandara Road, Tilak Marg and Mahatmas Gandhi Road in the morning, it almost came to a halt in the evening.
Massive traffic snarls on the busy Mathura Road has marred the charm of the ongoing auto expo at the Pragati Maidan. Large number of visitors rushing to the venue to witness the five-day event has led to immense traffic jams on not just the Mathura Road and ITO but a major part of the New Delhi area. The situation worsens during the morning and the evening peak hours when the jam stretches up to Connaught Place, Moolchand and Ashram.
