    Cold Capital faces fog prospect

    Cold Capital faces fog prospect
The cold wave that hit the National Capital on January 6 continued its spell on Sunday morning. Though the morning was comparatively pleasant, the day temperature was recorded three notches below the normal level.

The maximum and minimum temperature on Sunday was recorded at 18.1 degrees and 11.5 degrees Celsius.

However, the meteorological department has predicted a downward trend in the city’s weather for the next five days.

Met predicts dense fog from Sunday though runway visibility was recorded as 1,500 metres. Airport Met department director RK Jenamani said, “A thick blanket of fog is expected to envelope the city from 4.30 am on Monday morning to 9 am. This will cause the visibility levels to drop below 200 m and the activation of CAT III procedures on the airport. However, no rainfall is predicted and Delhiites can look forward to non-rainy days ahead.”

Heavy rainfall with hailstorm led the city to experience the coldest day temperature on Friday with the maximum recorded at a low of 16.9 degrees. The lowest temperature of the season, however, was recorded on Christmas eve at 2.9 degrees.

Jenamani added, “There has been a significant change in weather over the past day. A fresh spell of fog seems to be developing while a change in wind pattern due to a passing western disturbance has led to spread of moisture in the atmosphere. The temperature will continue to dip further in the next five days and the minimum temperature will drop to 5 degrees from the current 11.5 degrees. Cold westerly winds will continue to flow in the Capital and in the entire north India.”

According to the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) the normal visibility conditions did not affect many flight movements on the day. A spokesperson said, “Due to weather at other destinations, five flights were cancelled and around 20 delays. Dense fog blanket on Monday will activate Low Visibility Procedures on the Indira Gandhi international (IGI) Airport on Monday morning.”

However, train movements continued to suffer the most. More than 44 trains were running behind the schedule including Rajdhani Express, Duronto Express to Kolkata and Prayagraj Express to Allahabad. Apart from these, 27 trains were cancelled, 12 partially cancelled and eight rescheduled due to bad weather conditions.
