After kidnapping his 10-year-old nephew for ransom, a man allegedly murdered him over fear of being caught. The body of Mohammad Saleem, son of Ali Hasan, was discovered from a drain in north-east Delhi's New Usmanpur area on Sunday.
Five persons, including Babu Hasan, Saleem's uncle, have been arrested. Senior police officials are tight-lipped.
Saleem lived with his parents at Kartar Nagar, New Usmanpur. His father, Ali Hasan, runs a tailoring unit at New Usmanpur. Main accused Babu Hasan and the deceased's father are cousins. Babu and the other four accused worked at Ali's tailoring unit, a senior police official said.
A case of kidnapping was registered on Thursday after Ali received a ransom call from an unknown number. The caller threatened to kill Saleem if Ali failed to give him Rs 4 lakh in cash. Ali arranged the money and went with the ransom to bring his son back but, nobody turned up with his son at the said place.
A case of kidnapping was registered at New Usmanpur police station.
Babu Hasan and his associates' arrests came following the recovery of Saleem's body from a drain at fourth Pushta on Sunday.
Investigations revealed that it was the job of an insider. Police zeroed in on Ali's employees who during sustained interrogation revealed that Babu Hasan is the master mind. Babu and other accused confessed that they murdered Saleem by strangling him. A case of murder and kidnapping has been registered against them in this regard, the official said. Senior police official, however, refrained from saying anything over the incident.
