    Achuthanandan demands Chandy’s resignation
Kerala Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan on Sunday asked Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to resign for reinstating controversial IPS official Tomin J Thachankery in the context of Centre’s directive to take urgent action against him for violating service rules with his unauthorised Gulf tour in April, 2010.

Achuthanandan said in Thrissur that Chandy had committed violation of oath of office by reinstating the suspended IPS official who had allegedly indulged in espionage activities. He accused Chandy of “misinterpreting” the reports of the NIA and the Centre on the case against Thachankery in order to reinstate him in service.

Chandy, who had reinstated Thachankery saying that the NIA had cleared the revocation of his suspension, is finding himself in a tight spot after the Centre asked the State four days ago to take immediate action against the official. Even many top leaders of Chandy’s own Congress party have already made it clear that they do not support him on the Thachankery affair.

“By committing such an act in violation of the oath he had taken, Chandy has forfeited his right to remain in the office of the Chief Minister,” Achuthanandan said. “Chandy’s claim that the Government had taken Thachankery back as per the NIA’s clearance has been proved false now. In this context, Thachankery should be expelled from service,” he added.

Kerala BJP president V Muraleedharan warned of intense agitations by the party if the Government refused to take action against Thachankery. The State Government’s position in the Thachankery issue was suspicious, he said, adding that Chandy was trying to protect the controversial police official.

It was Achuthanandan who had suspended Thachankery, known to be close to the Congress and the official leadership of the CPI(M), when he was Chief Minister of the previous LDF Government, in April, 2010 in the name of his four-nation Gulf tour without authorisation and by misleading the Government.

The suspension was on the basis of a report of the ADGP (Intelligence) that he had gone to the Gulf after telling the Government that he planned to go to Sikkim.

The NIA initiated a probe against him immediately after that on the basis of a report from the Indian envoy in Doha, Qatar that he had allegedly held negotiations with some Kerala terror elements holed up there.

In a letter sent to the State Chief Secretary four days ago, the Union Home Department had recommended action against the top cop for violation of service rules. It also said that he had met suspicious persons and had accepted favours from people of bad repute.

Meanwhile, causing more headache for Chandy, Union Minister of State for Home and senior Congress leader Mullappally Ramachandran said in Kozhikode that the Centre would launch a reinvestigation if need be in the Thachankery affair. However, he said he could not disclose the details of the correspondences between the State and the Centre on the subject.

Even State Congress president Ramesh Chennithala did not look wholly supportive of Chandy over the matter when he said in Kalpetta that he expected the Government to take action against the police official if he had violated service rules.
