BSP rolls up sleeves to use EC veil directive
With the administration dutifully draping the statues of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and her party symbol elephant on Wednesday, senior leaders of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) held a meeting in the evening to finalise a strategy to turn the tide in their favour by making the ‘Election Commission veil order’ an election issue.

“The party is in a win-win situation. Supporters are angry at EC’s unconstitutional decision. The decision has united Dalits. The party will give a befitting reply in the forthcoming elections,” said a senior BSP leader after the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mayawati. Senior party coordinators and three Ministers were also present.

There is unanimity within BSP that the EC’s decision would invigorate voters, particularly the Dalits, “provided the ground level workers are able to convince them that their (Dalit) pride is at stake”. They feel it is a god-sent opportunity to further strengthen the party and retain power in Uttar Pradesh.

The leader said the BSP would spare the Election Commission but target Opposition parties for raising demand to veil the statues of the Chief Minister as well as elephants. In party rallies, the leaders would speak about how anti-Dalit this decision was and how the EC was forced to give such order under pressure of opposition parties, who have anti-Dalit mentality. “The party will stress that it has come to people’s court, instead of taking a legal recourse. That the pride of the party and Dalits rests with them,” the BSP leader said.
