Witch hunt in Kerala’s Congress
A committee that looked into the underperformance of the Congress party in Kerala in the last Assembly election held in April, 2010, has reported that leaders of the party-led (ruling) UDF themselves had worked to defeat its candidates even as the presence of the Director General of Prosecutions at the venue of a Congress meeting kicked off a controversy.
The report of the committee, headed by former Minister Vakkom Purushothaman, caused angry responses at the meeting of the State Congress executive in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday with several members demanding stringent action against those who had acted as betrayers in the election.
State Congress president Ramesh Chennithala told the meeting that the leadership was studying the report in detail and action could be taken only after considering the possible consequences. Chennithala also said that the names of those who worked against Congress candidates could not be disclosed.
He said that there were problems in the selection of candidates. The party candidates in many constituencies were not suitable when their capacity to win election was considered. The report also said that the party could not keep the community equations in balance in the selection of candidates.
The Congress had not been able to put up a convincing performance in the last Assembly election and this had caused serious problems for it in dealing with the allies which had performed in a better way. The performance of the Congress-led coalition itself was lackluster.
