Nilgiri tribals block road as jumbo kills 2 women
In another case of man-elephant conflict, two people had been killed in two days by a tusker reportedly in the Nilgiri area.
The latest victim is 50-year-old Gauri Singh of village Chaindara under Garadi GP. As the information spread, irate villagers of Nilgiri, a tribal-dominated block of Baleswar district, staged roadblock on Monday causing disruptions to vehicular traffic for several hours as the middle-aged woman was trampled by the tusker in the wee hours.
According to Forest officials, the elephant that belongs to the Dalma Sanctuary of Jharkhand was the same which had killed another woman, Suni Singh (60), on Sunday near village Patna. “We are trying to locate the elephant,” said Baleswar DFO Kedar Swain.
The elephant pulled down a small hut in which Gauri was fast asleep. Her husband Sankar Singh managed to run away from the hurt.
