India’s Milan with 14 countries at Andaman
India will hold a multilateral naval exercise ‘Milan’ with 14 countries for a week off the Andaman and Nicobar Islands starting from February one. This is the eighth episode of ‘Milan’ exercise which is held off Andaman every alternate year since the fist exercise took place in 1995.
Giving details of the exercise, Navy spokesman Commander P Satish said here on Monday, countries including Australia, Bangladesh, Indonensia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei and Myanmar will send their warships for the drill.
Sychelles, Maldives and Mauritius, however, will send their delegates for table top exercises and seminar named ‘Maritime Capacity Building Through Mutual Co-operation,’ he said adding Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma will deliver the key note address.
Highlighting the importance of the exercise, he said India is focusing on building closer defence and maritime ties with South Eastern Asian countries. Moreover, regular exchanges help the navies of the region to enhance inter-operability and synergy to enable them to operate smoothly during relief operations besides anti-piracy and anti-terrorism operations.
