IAF chief’s Malaysia visit to boost defence relations
India and Malaysia will discuss the entire range of defence relations during IAF chief Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne’s four-day visit to Kuala Lumpur, starting Monday. The two sides will also explore ways to further enhance military exchanges and joint exercises between the two countries.
Giving details of Browne’s schedule, officials said he will meet Malaysian Chief of Defence Force General Tan Sri Dato Sri Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin and Chief of Royal Malaysian Air Force, General Tan Sri Dato Sri Rodzali bin Daud.
A team of IAF pilots and technicians were in Malaysia in 2008 for a period of two years to train Malaysian pilots, weapon system operators and maintenance staff for the smooth induction and operation of their newly acquired SU-30 MKM fighter aircraft. India has a fleet of more than 100 SU-30 fighter jets and has a professional maintenance back up infrastructure within the country and Malaysia is keen to tap this expertise.
The IAF also helped their Malaysian counterparts to set up a Systems School for the Su-30 MKM at Gong Kedak Air Base. Browne will visit Gong Kedak and Subang airbases and hold talks on issues including professional exchanges, SU-30 training courses, maintenance and logistic issues, officials said.
His visit to Malaysia comes in the backdrop of India strengthening defence and strategic relations with countries in Asian region and Defence Minister AK Antony visiting Malaysia last year. India has also enhanced defence ties with countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and South Korea in the last few years.
