Political storm over Mohanty attack
Monday’s attack on Panchayati Raj Minister Maheswar Mohanty has stirred political accusations and counter-accusations between the ruling BJD and the main opposition Congress with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemning the incident in the strongest terms.
While the BJD has pointed fingers at the Congress for the terrible attack on the Minister, the Congress, on the other hand, has described the incident as the manifestation of internal bickerings in the rulaing BJD.
However, the BJP saw the incident as the beginning of the manifestation of people’s anger against the ruling party leaders.
Since the ruling party had utterly failed to fulfill the promises given to the people, the Ministers had become the victim, which may recur in future, said State BJP spokesman Asok Sahu.
The Chief Minister who had been to see Panchayati Raj Minister Mohanty who was being treated in the Kalinga Hospital here, condemned the incident and said the Government would probe into the incident.
Stating that he was deeply shocked over the “terrible attack” on Mohanty, he said, “This is the most unhealthy practice to resort to violence during elections,” adding that no one should resort to violence to settle scores.
Former Congress leader and Puri BJD Lok Sabha Member Pinkai Mishra alleged that the attack was orchestrated by opposition Congress pointing finger at former MLA Lalatendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra.
He said frustrated over the continued defeats in successive elections since BJD came to power and seeing the imminent defeat in the panchayat polls, the Congress had designed the savage attack. However, the Congress would not succeed in its attempt, he said and added that people would give a befitting reply to the Congress in the panchayat polls.
