    BJP ups ante against PC
The Supreme Court’s observation on grant of sanction for prosecution of public servants gave another opportunity to the BJP to target Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and raise its pitch against Home Minister P Chidambaram for his alleged involvement in the 2G scam.

The Opposition party suggested Singh — whom it has already criticised for ‘inaction’ in cases of scams involving his Cabinet and party colleagues — to draw the “right lessons” from the SC’s observations. It described the apex court’s observations as the “second indictment” of the Prime Minister — the first being in the case related to CVC PJ Thomas’s appointment.

The party argued that the SC observation was an indictment of the PM as his office sat for 16 months on Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy’s request seeking sanction to prosecute then Telecom Minister A Raja in the 2G case.

BJP spokesman Ravishankar Prasad sought to know from the PM whether he would now allow an “honest probe” into the role of then Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the 2 G scam.

“There is voluminous evidence available against Chidambaram. Had he acted promptly and accepted the advice of his officers, huge amounts of public revenue in pricing of 2G spectrum would not have been lost,” Prasad said.
