Youth hurt, bike damaged, but no compensation
he Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) was prompt in announcing compensation for the victims who were mowed down by its driver, Santosh Mane, on January 25. However, Suraj Pawar (23), who was injured in Mane’s rampage, has not received any compensation from the MSRTC.
Being the son of a defence employee, Pawar was taking treatment at the Command Hospital. MSRTC officials did not visit that hospital in spite of Suraj’s name appearing on the list of injured victims.
A resident of Hadapsar, Suraj was going for a job interview on his motorcycle when he was knocked down by Mane’s bus near Swargate. He sustained a leg injury, while his bike was damaged. His father, Vasant, who works with the Military Engineering Services is now making the rounds of the MSRTC offices for compensation.
Vasant told DNA, “My son Suraj completed his post-graduation in tools and design and on January 25 he was going for a job interview on his bike. When he was near Swargate, he was hit by Mane’s ST bus and was injured on his leg and back. His bike was damaged and later the police took it to the Swargate police station.”
“We usually go to the Command Hospital for treatment. Suraj listed his name on the list for the injured and went to that hospital. After he recovered, we went to the MSRTC for compensation, but were shocked to know that his name was not on the list which MSRTC had. We have shown them the police record where Suraj’s name is on the list, but so far we have not got any compensation from MSRTC.”
When DNA contacted senior manager of Swargate depot, Vijay Divate regarding the issue, he said, “We sent the initial list of 29 injured people to the chief minister and he gave approval for compensation to those whose names were on that list. Pawar’s name was not included on that list but as promised by the MSRTC, we will be giving him the compensation.
“However the procedure will be different. We have given him a ‘P’ form in which we have asked him to fill up all details regarding his claim and we will sanction his compensation through the divisional office.”
