Hearing in Maval firing probe begins

The one-man judicial commission of retired justice MG Gaikwad, set up to investigate the police firing incident in Maval, would be seeking extension of its tenure to complete its work. The commission was to submit its report to the state government by the end of February.

The death of three farmers in police firing in Maval in August compelled the state government to set up the judicial commission.

A total of 186 affidavits were filed by various parties before the probe, the hearings of which started on Monday. On the first day of the hearing, the district collectorate and the rural police were represented by their lawyers, DD Shinde and SR Bhosale, respectively.

KD Patil, secretary to the probe, told DNA, “The probe would have to scrutinise the 186 affidavits and also conduct cross-examination of the witnesses. After those deliberations, the report would be filed. As this would take some time to finish, we would be writing to the state government for extension of our tenure.”

The role of the then superintendent of police (rural) Sandeep Karnik was criticised by the opposition parties. He was transferred.
