Cong panel on Dalits
In a bid to woo Dalit voters of Uttar Pradesh, the Congress has devised a specific strategy for the reserved constituencies so as to increase the tally. A two member sub-committee consisting chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and party MP PL Punia and Ashok Tanwar has been constituted to look after over 80 reserved constituencies in the State.
The sub-committee will specifically focus on the issues concerning Dalits and other major castes inhabiting in these reserved constituencies. The party feels that Punia’s work as the Chairman of the SC commission will help the party to convince Dalits to support it.
The special focus for reserved constituencies was needed in view of the recent embarrassment faced by the party when nomination of its candidate Vijay Gaur from Duddhi reserved constituency was rejected. He had moved the Allahabad High Court against the returning officers decision. The Congress feels emboldened as court has issued notice to the State Election Commission asking it to find out if any malpractice was conducted in the process or not and report within a week, senior Congress leader Mohan Prakash said on Friday.
Prakash said that the entire confusion arose as Gond, which is termed as Scheduled Tribe in Sonbhadra region from where Gaur was earlier winning the election, is treated as Scheduled Caste in other places in state, including adjoining areas. So, being from Gond community got the Scheduled Caste certificate from Lucknow, but the rival BSP candidate got his SC certificate cancelled following which his nomination was rejected.
