DMK lashes out at UPA Govt

DMK lashes out at UPA Govt
It seems that the Supreme Court verdict on the 2G scam has got under the DMK skin. It is apparent that the ruling Congress-led UPA Government is unable to help its southern ally and the latter on Friday lashed back criticising it for lethargy and inaction on key issues dogging Tamil Nadu — Kudankulam, Mullaperiyar and attack on Tamil fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy.

In fact the general council resolution adopted on Friday even threatened agitation if the UPA Government failed to take action about the fishermen issue.

But while, threatening the Centre after strong suggestions by party functionaries to snap ties with the Congress, the DMK chose to stick to the Congress for now and take decisions based on situation. Talking to mediapersons at the end of the general council, party president M Karunanidhi pointed out that the Parliament election was still two years away.

In the 24 resolutions passed the party had strong words against both the Centre and State Government led by the AIADMK, charging them of “lethargic” approach in solving the Kudankulam nuclear power plant (KNPP) issue. The party also revived the demand for restoring the Mullaperiyar dam area to Tamil Nadu.

The meeting assumed significance with Supreme Court verdict cancelling all 122 licences and blamed the former Telecom Minister A Raja for the scam. The mood at the party was such that there were expectations of ties snapping. But Karunanidhi’s words at the end of the meeting that the DMK would “continue” to be in alliance with the Congress only went to highlight the fact that the party still needs the Congress and cannot afford leave the alliance at this troubled juncture.

On Kudankulam the party resolution pointed out that no progress has taken place in the consultation between the Central Expert Committee and the protesters that revolves round safety concerns of the locals: “The Jayalalithaa Government not taking any action in this matter gives rise to an impression that there is some intention on its part. Therefore, keeping in mind national interests, the Central and State Governments should act to find an early solution.”

Similarly the DMK council asked the Centre to take decisions quickly on the Mullaperiyar dam row between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Supporting its leader Karunanidhi’s recent demand for retrieving Devikulam and Peermedu taluks from Kerala to solve the Mullaperiyar issue, the council noted that this was the “just” and “long term” solution to resolve the issue.

“The Centre should implement this with the help of the state government and find a lasting solution to the issue and thus uphold the nation’s unity and federal structure.”

Demanding quick decision on the attacks by Sri Lankan navy on Tamil Nadu fishermen, the DMK has threatened to go on agitation mode if the centre failed to act on the issue.

The DMK general council took on the Jayalalithaa government, alleging that it was foisting cases and police excesses against its functionaries. It warned the ruling party that DMK would begin continued agitation if the “emergency” like situation is not ended. The cases against the party were done with a vengeful motive the DMK said.
