Power firm opposes demand of Narmada Bachao Andolan’
Reacting strongly to Narmada Bachao Andolan’s demand for scrapping of the project and CBI inquiry, the Shree Maheshwar Hydel Power Corporation Limited (SMHPCL) on Friday alleged that the Narmada Bachao Andolan has been spreading inaccurate information to mislead people, malign the project and delay it.
According to information, alleging massive financial irregularities in its execution, the Narmada Bachao Andolan had demanded in Delhi on Thursday, scrapping of the controversial project in MP. They had claimed that its cost had escalated several times than the original estimate. It also demanded a CBI inquiry into the ‘irregular public lending’ by financial institutions and banks after registering a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Reacting to NBA’s allegations, SMHPCL Legal Manager Jaishree Nangare Deherkar said, “The NBA has been continuously spreading baseless and inaccurate information in order to mislead people and with the objective of maligning the project and delaying it with malafide intentions.”
“Due to continual efforts on their part to do so, we had filed a defamation case against the NBA, and the Supreme Court had passed a judgement in February 2006 stating that the respondents shall not make any defamatory statements against the appellants imputing financial irregularity or dishonesty on the part of the appellants or Shree Maheshwar Hydel Power Project including but not limited to allegations viz connivance, conspiracy, siphoning of funds, loot, unleashing terror,” the officer said.
He alleged that in view of this, the NBA, by making the same allegations is in fact, guilty of contempt of court. The Legal Manager also said that the NBA activists had released a Press note in October 2011 containing defamatory material and allegations against the Maheshwar project.
SMHPCL accordingly filed an application for contempt of court before the Bombay High Court following which it issued a notice to Chitroopa Palit, an activist of NBA and notice of show cause to the author of the article published on the website of the magazine, Down to Earth.
