Threat perception: Tight security for Punjab officials

Threat perception: Tight security for Punjab officials
While security threat still looms large over the VVIPs of Punjab after insurgency, hundreds of State civil officials have been enjoying tight security at the behest of “threat perception.”

In a list submitted by the Punjab Police to the Election Commission of India (ECI), 284 civil officers and 14 NGOs of Punjab come under protected category and have been provided adequate security. Of 284 protected persons only 13 are retired civil administrative officers, among whom 11 live in Chandigarh and other two living in New Delhi are guarded by sleuths of Punjab Police.

Due to the “threat perception report” submitted by the police intelligence, the Security Review Committee (SRC) of police provides the desired security to these protected officers.

A police source close to The Pioneer revealed that State police had to provide security cover to some civil officials against whom there is no evidence of threat to their lives. He attributed this “compulsion to provide security cover” to the threat of vicious elements present in the society.
