Polls over in Uttarakhand, mood introspective at party offices

Polls over in Uttarakhand, mood introspective at party offices
Post polling session when there is nearly one month time to declare people's verdict, for major political parties particularly those which are expecting better performance, this is the time for introspection.

High voter turnout, huge gap between polling and counting, rebellion within ranks and files seem to have given the political parties an opportunity to assess their respective party position in the recently concluded elections.

Whereas high voter turn out in certain districts of the hill States like Udhamsingh Nagar (about 76.65 per cent), Haridwar (about 74 per cent) and Uttarkashi (about 72 per cent) has left many a political parties and political analysts guessing, low polling in certain districts Almora (about 55 per cent), Champawat (about 60 per cent) Bageshwar (about 61 per cent) has also come as concerning for the major players in the State like BJP and the Congress.

Besides, rebellion pre-distribution of tickets that badly affected different political parties' electoral calculations is also being widely discussed within the parties. The leaders cutting across the party lines have admitted to the fact that granting party ticket to certain candidates overlooking popular sentiments within the party may cost them in these elections.

For instance whereas ex-MLA Harish Durgapal and Rajinder Khanwal were earlier in the race for a ticket from Lalkuwa Assembly seat in Nainital district, the party finally zeroed in on Harender Bohara. However, Durgapal had to contest the election from this seat as an independent giving a tough fight to the Congress'official candidate. Bypassing popular sentiments within the parties during distribution of tickets may prove costly to the political parties once the entire poll process is over as there is great degree of dissatisfaction among the activists of the parties, observed poll pundits.

However, to assess party activists' mood and all other aspects, the Congress now seems to be seeking feedback from all the concerned across the State. Since polling results are yet to be declared, there is no any major planning at the party level as of now.
