Transgender hired as HC employee in watershed move

Transgender hired as HC employee in watershed move
In what is perhaps the first move of its kind in the country, a 27 year old transgender was appointed as a Class IV employee in the Karnataka High Court.

C Anu, a resident of Bangalore, will be part of the 5,500-strong workforce of the High Court from Monday. Anu received the appointment letter from the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Vikramjit Sen and Justice Altamas Kabir of the Supreme Court, also the chairman of the Legal Services Authority, in a modest ceremony at the High Court.

C Anu was earlier known as Lokesh. A class V dropout from a Government school in Haleguddadahalli in Bangalore, Anu is fluent in Kannada, Tamil and Hindi. She is also a trained beautician and dancer.

Conscious about bridging the gender divide, Karnataka High Court appointed Anu, a transgender to bring the group to the mainstream. Anu told The Pioneer that this gesture will go a long way in bridging the divide. She said: “I am happy I got this job. This is an effort to bring my community to the mainstream. It has also justice done to us.”

It may be recalled here that as part of the conscious policy decision of the State Government, the Bangalore University last year reserved a seat for transgenders in all post-graduate courses. The same year, the Karnataka Backward Classes Commission panel recommended that transgenders be included in the OBC list.

The then Chief Minister, BS Yedyurappa announced that all transgenders above 40 years be given a monthly social security benefit of Rs 400. There has been a demand for providing ration cards to transgenders, which has yet to be done since they do not have voter ID cards.
