Car sales rise in Jan
Carmakers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota, Tata Motors and M&M reported better sales in January except General Motors and Ford, which announced 17.46 per cent and 2.99 per cent decline in their respective sales.
While country’s largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki made a turnaround in monthly sales after seven consecutive months of drop, with the company reporting 5.18 per cent rise in sales to 1,15,433 units for January compared to 1,09,743 units in the same month last year, second largest carmaker Hyundai announced a 15.20 per cent jump in total sales to 49,901 units in January.
“The year seems to have started on a positive note, domestic sales are showing some buoyancy. But we will have to cautiously watch how this momentum picks up in the months ahead,” said HMIL Director (Marketing and Sales) Arvind Saxena.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported an 89.34 per cent increase in sales to 17,395 units in January as against 9,187 units in the corresponding month last year driven by robust demand for its latest ‘Etios’ and ‘Liva’ models.
“It’s been a good start to the year with a robust growth. We are happy with the response to the Etios series, the new Innova and the new Fortuner,” TKM Deputy Managing Director (Marketing) Sandeep Singh said.
Auto-maker Mahindra & Mahindra announced its highest ever monthly sales of 44,717 units in Januray compared to 36,718 units in the last year, registering a rise of 21.78 per cent over the year-ago period.
Tata Motors reported a 15.97 per cent increase in total vehicle sales during January to 87,465 units. The company sold 75,423 units in the corresponding month last year, Tata Motors said in a statement.
General Motors India posted a 17.46 per cent decline in sales to 8,241 units in January compared to 9,984 units in the same month last year. “The sales were not on the expected lines as the market continues to be sluggish.
High interest rates, a hike in fuel prices, commodity prices, growing inflation and negative market sentiments continue to put lot of pressure on the automobile market,” GM India Vice-President P Balendran said. Car-maker Ford India reported a 2.99 per cent decline in its total sales during January at 10,789 units as against 11,121 units in the corresponding month last year.
