Latest National News : Bannurmath shuns Lokayukta post
Former Kerala High Court Chief Justice SR Bannurmath on Tuesday asked Karnataka Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda not to consider him for the Lokayukta’s post. He also launched a tirade against Governor HR Bhardwaj for the “unverified and untrue” observations from Raj Bhavan.
The development comes a day after Bhardwaj formally rejected the Government’s proposal recommending him as Lokayukta and returned the file. Bannurmath told reporters he wanted the position filled up expeditiously but not by him.
Bannurmath is hurt by the Governor’s comments to the media. The spat between the Karnataka Government and Governor on appointing a Lokayukta took an ugly turn as Bhardwaj refused to appoint Bannurmath. The Governor also refused to budge an inch, leading to a war of words.
On Monday, the Governor had formally rejected the recommendation of the Cabinet to appoint Bannurmath as Lokayukta and sent the file back to the Government for suggesting an alternative. The position has been vacant for five months.
Bannurmath criticised Bhardwaj for his untrue and unverified observations. He told the media in Bangalore on Tuesday, “I am hurt by baseless allegations against me. These are false, legally untenable and hurtful. I have lost mental peace and my health is affected on their account, affecting my image. I am not in a position to bear this torture and humiliation anymore.” Bannurmath has also written to Sadananda Gowda, asking him not to consider him for the post.
After a three-month standoff with the BJP Government, Bhardwaj had “formally” rejected its recommendation on Bannurmath’s appointment, which was held up over a land allotment controversy.
On September 19, former Supreme Court judge Shivaraj Patil, who succeeded Santosh Hegde, had quit in the wake of allegations of land allotment norms violation.
An insider in the ruling party told The Pioneer that Bannurmath was the choice of former Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, who is battling many cases after he was directly indicted by Santosh Hegde in a mining report.
Now, the State Government has once again started a consultation process with Opposition parties to find a suitable person. A source in the Government told The Pioneer that Justice Srikrishna might be approached.
