Latest NAtional News : ‘VS is beyond correction’

Kerala’s senior-most communist leader VS Achuthanandan, now 88, had determined the direction of the last four State conferences of the CPI(M) held in the past 14 years with his die-hard divisionist postures but observers now predict that the party conference currently on in Thiruvananthapuram could turn out to be his Waterloo.

The prediction is not totally unfounded: The working report State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan presented to the delegates’ meet of the conference on Tuesday unequivocally stated that there was no way the party could now correct Achuthanandan, who had been defying the very basic disciplines of the party through his arbitrary actions one after the other.

The report held him responsible for almost all the setbacks the Kerala CPI(M) suffered in the recent past, including the humiliating defeat of the LDF in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. CPI(M)-watchers say that Achuthanandan is likely to emerge almost as a non-entity in the CPI(M) after the current State conference as he does not have any support base to fall back on.

“Systematic onslaught by the Pinarayi faction (neo-liberalist official leadership) has ensured the total break up of the so-called VS group. If there is a VS group still, it does not have many crusaders. I am sure that not many comrades would stand up to talk for him in the discussions at this meet,” says a senior journalist who has covered CPI(M) meets for over the past 30 years.

The official leadership has “found” that Achuthanandan had connived with party’s enemies to make Pinarayi an accused in the Rs 374.5-crore SNC Lavalin corruption case. It also alleges that the octogenarian Marxist leader had used the services of a coterie to keep alive the case against Pinarayi in which he eventually became the seventh accused.

The working report alleged that Achuthanandan was a total failure as chief minister of the 2006-11 LDF government. He could not ensure coordination between the party, leader of the LDF, and the government, it alleged. The report also wondered for whose sake Achuthanandan was behaving in the particular manner.
