ADMK witnesses flurry of entrants from DMDK
The AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa seem to have staged a coup of sorts when 1,000 DMDK workers — including a close friend of actor-turned-politician and Opposition leader — Ibrahim Rowther joined the AIADMK in the presence of Jayalalithaa herself on Tuesday.
This is not all, the lady, after the heated altercation last week in the Assembly, has also poached on the DMDK trade unionist K Velmurugan who had stood for Chennai Mayor’s post last October.
Rowther, was not only a close friend, was also a producer who was instrumental in promoting and producing many of Vijayakanth’s films. “The hope with which you have joined the AIADMK will not go waste,” was how Jayalalithaa greeted the new joiners and assured that the new members will help in strengthening the AIADMK. She distributed membership cards to the DMDK functionaries
and workers. Among the joiners also include DMDK election wing secretary K Jagaveerapandian and medical wing secretary Dr Pari.
It may be recalled that Jayalalithaa in the Assembly last week had expressed regret for having aligned with the DMDK and termed Vijayakanth’s behaviour “obnoxious”. She had said that she was not inclined for an alliance for the April 2011 Assembly election, but gave in because of pressures from the party. His behaviour was referred to the Privilege Committee and subsequently Vijayakant was banned from the Assembly for 10 days, which will go on till the next session of the Assembly.
Later, Vijayakanth too expressed his regret for aligning with AIADMK and claimed that it was the AIADMK which came after DMDK for alliance.
The parties in Tamil Nadu are now getting ready for Shankarankoil by-polls, which is yet to be announced.
