13/7 accused met Osama, trained under him at a PoK camp
In a new but a shocking twist to the investigations in the 13/7 Mumbai triple blasts, Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Tuesday claimed that one of the accused, Haroon Rashid Abdul Hamid Naik, had met Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden and trained under in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Arrested first in connection with a fake currency case on August 22 last year and now in ATS’ custody as an accused in the 13/7 blasts, Haroon Naik (35) had also met Lashkar-e-Tayyeba’s chief-of-operations Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi, who is wanted by India in the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai, and Azam Cheema alias Babaji, the key planner of the July 11, 2006 serial train blasts in the metropolis.
Informed ATS sources said that in August 2001, Haroon Naik had met Osama in Bahawalpur. “While undergoing training — Daura-e-Aam and then Daura-e-Khas — in the Bahawalpur camp, Haroon Naik had happened to listen to an indoctrination session from Laden,” sources said.
According to sources, Haroon Naik had sneaked into Pakistan some time in last 2000. He was a part of group of operatives who were addressed by Osama in Bhawalpur.
Osama, who has killed last year by American forces in Abottabad, had then sermoned in Arabic on jihad, which was translated to the group of 30 to 35 persons who underwent training.
Haroon Naik is the main link of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) and networks with terror groups like Al Qaeda, Jaish-e-Mohammed and LeT.
A diploma in digital electronics from an institute in Ulhasnagar, Haroon Naik was sent to terror training by IM founder Riyaz Bhatkal.
After the September 11, 2001 World Trade Centre and Pentagon attacks by al Qaeda, Haroon Naik returned to India and remained in touch with Aftab Ansari, who engineered the attack outside the American Consulate in Kolkata. Before that he also fought in Afghanistan against the Northern Alliance.
A resident of Mumbra in neighbouring Thane district, Haroon Naik has been booked by the ATS in the 13/7 triple blasts. The investigators are currently questioning on the hawala route used for handing the money to key IM operative Yasin Bhatkal, who masterminded the blasts atn Zaveri Bazar, Opera House and Dadar on the evening of July 13, 2011, in which 27 persons were killed and 127 others injured.
Haroon Naik is among the four persons arrested by the ATS in the 13/7 blasts case. Besides Haroon, three others in ATS’ custody are: Naqi Ahmed Wasi Ahmed Shaikh (22) Nadeem Akhtar Ashfaq Shaikh (23) both from Deora Bandhauli in Darbhanga - two key members of Indian Mujahideen - and Kanwar Nain Wazeer Chand Pathrija (42), a hawala operator from Delhi.
