BJP demands Khurshid’s scalp
A day after the Election Commission censured Law Minister Salman Khurshid for violation of the model code of conduct, the BJP demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to sack the Minister for his ‘unlawful’ comment.
The Opposition party also asked the PM to clarify his stand on Khurshid’s announcement.
“The verdict from EC is sufficient to demand resignation of Salman Khurshid from Government,” BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters. While campaigning for his wife Louise Khurhsid in Farrukhabad, Khurshid had promised that if voted to power his party would increase the minority sub-quota for minorities in the 27 per cent Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation from existing 4.5 per cent to 9 per cent.
“This was an unconstitutional announcement made by a person sitting on constitutional post and it clearly shows that Congress still believes in divide and rule policy for political gains,” Naqvi said, adding, “Khurshid had tried to destroy the social harmony and fabric of the country and Uttar Pradesh for political gains.”
BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “The decision of the EC is welcome. Khurshid was not only a Congress leader but also the Minority Affairs Minister when he made the announcement of 9 per cent quota for minorities after the model code of conduct came into being,” he said.
“He was trying to cause unfair advantage to the Congress by this announcement and violated the level playing field on which the entire model code functions. Therefore the complaint of the BJP against Khurshid stands vindicated,” Prasad said.
