J&K Minister quits over exam row

J&K Minister quits over exam row
Embarrassed J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday had his way as State Education Minister Peerzada Mohd Sayeed is learnt to have forwarded his resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi for necessary action.

After receiving a report of the Crime Branch, Omar had mounted pressure on the Congress high command to take cognisance of serious allegations levelled against the Congress Minister. After holding wider consultations with State PCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz and in-charge of the State party unit, the party high command had directed him to step down without wasting much time.

Shying away from mediapersons, Peerzada, however, remained closeted inside his official residence throughout the day. In the evening, his supporters voluntarily briefed mediapersons and announced that Peerzada Sayeed had forwarded his resignation to the party president. Assembled outside his residence in large numbers, his supporters dragged Omar Abdullah’s name in the alleged custodial death of Sayeed Mohd Yousaf, National Conference worker and demanded justice for their leader as well.

Seeing the presence of a large number of mediapersons, several supporters of the State Education Minister later started shouted slogans against the Chief Minister. “How can Omar Abdullah demand resignation of Peerzada saab when he is himself facing an inquiry in the alleged custodial killing of a NC worker,” shouted Peerzada’s supporters while giving vent to their anger.

A few others waiting outside his residence said when charges of corruption were levelled against the Chief Minister, nobody in New Delhi asked him to step down. But everyone is ganging up against our leader and putting pressure on him to step down.

Sayeed was accused of helping his son clear his Class X exam using ‘unfair means’. The inquiry conducted by the Crime Branch on the directions of the Chief Minister had clearly stated that the answer sheets of the Education Minister’s foster son Imam Sauban were written in two different hand-writings with the connivance of senior officials of Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education in 2009.

Interestingly for the last three years, the matter was kept under wraps and on many occasions the State Education Minister had clarified that the allegations levelled against him were politically motivated and aimed at maligning his image.

During Ghulam Nabi Azad’s term in office Peerzada Mohd Sayeed had to step down from the Ministry in 2008 after one of the legislators accused him of charging money for issuing no objection certificate for setting up ETT centres.
