India resists EU push for Iran sanctions
Resisting pressure from European Union (EU) and the US to curb oil trade with Iran and bring it to the negotiating table over its nuclear programme, India on Friday said diplomacy was the best option to deal with the concerns.

European Council president Herman Van Rompuy on Friday asked India to use its leverage to bring Iran to the negotiating table over its suspected nuclear programme.

“We will share at lunchtime, I think, our deep concern on the Iranian nuclear programme, and will ask Prime Minister Singh to use India’s leverage towards Iran to help bring Tehran back to the negotiating table,” Rompuy said at a Press conference here on the sidelines of European Union-India Summit here.

Though maintaining there are problems with Iran’s nuclear programme, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, however, said, “We sincerely believe that this issue can be and should be resolved by giving maximum scope to diplomacy and peaceful resolution of this conflict.”

Lately Washington and the EU have tightened sanctions against Iran, in order to clog its oil revenues and persuade it to abandon a suspected nuclear weapons programme.

However, Tehran claims its nuclear programme is for peaceful means.

New Delhi imports 12 Billion dollar oil annually from Tehran. In the wake of western sanctions , it has stated that it will in not scale down its petroleum imports from Iran. Under a new arrangement the two countries have settled the issue of oil with New Delhi to make 45 percent of overall payment in Indian rupees.
