Even opinion poll suggests likelihood, though ‘Cong-NCP to emerge largest’
Predicting a “hung house” in the forthcoming BMC poll, an opinion poll conducted jointly by Marathi television channel “Star Majha” and independent pollster Nelson has forecast that Congress-NCP alliance would win 109 seats, five seats short of a simple majority of 114 seats in the 227-member civic body.
Sticking its neck out, the Star Majha-Nelson opinion poll said that the February 16 poll will see the end of the 16-year-long rule of the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance, which has this time around teamed up with Ramdas Athavale-led RPI(A) in the crucial BMC contest.
According to the opinion poll, the Sena-BJP-Republican Party of India (A) grand alliance would secure 96 seats in the poll, as against the 112 seats won by the two saffron alliance partners collectively in the 2007 election. Notwithstanding high expectations that it has created in the media as well among the people, the Raj Thackeray-led MNS will win a mere 11 seats if as against the eight seats it had won it debut-making elections in 2007. According to the pollsters, the Samjajwadi Party will bag five seats, while Independents will win the remaining three seats in the BMC.
Star Majha and Nelson have based their findings on the basis of interviews of 40,000-odd people living in various parts of the metropolis that they conducted between January 24 and February 1, 2012. During the interviews, the pollsters sought the opinion of people on various issues, including their electoral preference.
In the event of the Congress-NCP alliance emerging as the single-largest party but still falling short of a simple majority by five seats as has been predicted, it remains to be seen as to how the DF partners will cobble the numbers necessary for governing the BMC.
On his part, chief minister Prithiviraj Chavan has said that come what may, the DF partners would not seek the MNS’ support in the post-poll scenario. In such an event, the SP would be a ready alternative for them.
