Veteran leader CK Chandrappan was on Saturday elected unanimously as the secretary of the Kerala CPI at the end of the party’s 21st State conference in Kollam.
His election came in the context of the tough stand he adopted against the CPI(M)’s alleged big-brotherly attitude towards the constituent parties of the Opposition LDF.
This was the first time Chandrappan was formally elected by the party to its top post. He had become CPI secretary after veteran leader Veliyam Bhargavan vacated the post due to health reasons on November 14, 2010. The newly constituted 89-member State council of the party decided to keep Chandrappan as secretary at its first meeting at the meet venue in Kollam.
Chandrappan had come into politics as a student activist in the 1950s and had served as national president and general secretary of the All India Students Federation (AISF) and president and general secretary of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF). He was elected to the Lok Sabha three times, first in 1971 from Thalassery, then from Kannur and in 2004 from Thrissur.
