    Ranchi mourns its dead warrior

    Ranchi mourns its dead warrior
Ranchi wept as the body of BSF officer Rajesh Sharan was brought in on Sunday morning. Second-in-command of BSF’s 107th Battalion, Sharan died during a landmine blast by Maoists in Malkangiri district of Odisha on Friday.

Around 10.30 on Sunday morning, his body was brought in by a BSF helicopter, where it was received by his family and friends.

Crowds from the city joined the march till the place his last rites took place, often raising chocked slogans of ‘Shaheed Rajesh Sharan amar rahe’ and constant showering of flower petals. Men, women, children, old and infirm, all came out of their homes to pay tribute - saluting him, offering flowers or folding hands.

An open van drove across Heenu, Doranda, Rajendra Chowk, Sujata, Albert Ekka Chowk, Kutchery and Karamtoli before reaching the martyr’s home. From political workers to children, young men and women — everyone was seen paying tributes to him.

A child with his parent was trying to offer flowers to the body; it was hard to stop tears from rolling down. A large number of political leaders from the BJP and Congress too paid floral tribute. Around 1,000 people had joined the march after Sharan’s body was taken to his home and Harmu Mukti Dham, where his last rites were performed by his younger brother Rakesh.

The body was brought to Narayan Enclave Apartment, Sharan’s house, around 12.30 pm. Sharan’s nine-year-old son, Ishan, was barely able to understand the degree of tragedy and looking in blank as he found everybody weeping. It was a tragic moment as Ishan refused to recognise his father’s body at first glance. “This is not my father?” he asked and looked bewildered.

Eighty-year-old Prem Sharan Satrangi, was making arrangements for the last rites of his brave son quite silently, often trying to stop crying. Numb to all consolation from family members, wife Ranjeeta could not be stopped from climbing the van to hug her husband’s body.

Satrangi shuddered with grief as he gave shoulder to his son’s coffin. Officers of Jharkhand Police, CRPF and BSF, along with and the Deputy Commissioner joined the march. The procession reached Mukti Dham at 1:00 pm where he was given guard of honour by BSF jawans with 40 rounds of gunfire.
