    SC hearing against KGB today

    SC hearing against KGB today
The Supreme Court on Monday will start hearing a petition against former Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan for “illegal amassment of wealth and misuse of authority”.

The petition has been filed by noted lawyer Prashant Bhushan.

The apex court will hear this petition against its former Chief Justice, along with an already filed complaint by another advocate Manohar Lal Sharma.

The bench headed by Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia had already issued notices to Kerala and Tamil Nadu Governments for land purchases by Balakrishnan’s kith and kin.

In his petition coming up before the bench on Monday, Bhushan has demanded removal of Balakrishnan from the post of Chairman, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), alleging “gross impropriety and massive wealth amassment.”

Apart from the allegations on dubious land deals, the petitioner also wants a probe into Balakrishnan’s alleged “repeated lies” to save jailed former Telecom Minister A Raja, and allegedly calling former Madras High Court Justice Reghupathy for granting a bail for his associates.

Detailing links between massive property purchases in the name of daughters, sons-in-law and brother and questioning some crucial ruling in certain corporate cases, Bhushan demanded the review of such judgements of Balakrishnan.

The petition also said that the Government had hushed up the investigation of Income Tax department against Balakrishnan’s daughters KB Sony and KB Rani and their husbands PV Sreenijan and MJ Benny.

The elder son-in-law Sreenijan was a Congress candidate in Assembly elections in Kerala and was Youth Congress State office-bearer.

“Already the concerned Income Tax Commissioner had come out in public through a media briefing that his (Balakrishnan’s) relatives are facing probe on illegal wealth and the department had submitted report,” said Bhushan in his petition against former Chief Justice of India.

“That the continuance of Respondent No. 3 (KG Balakrishnan) as the Chairperson of the NHRC despite several grave charges of misconduct against him is against public interest and would defeat the purpose for which the NHRC was created i.e. having a vigilant body to ensure that the human rights of the citizens of India are not violated,” said the petitioner, demanding his removal of Balakrishnan and initiating probe.
