5 kids charred to death, 4 NCP men electrocuted
Nine persons — comprising five children and four NCP workers — were killed and 10 others injured in two tragic incidents that befell the neighbouring Thane district in less than a span of 12 hours between late on Saturday night and Sunday noon.
While five children of the same family — aged between seven months and 12 years — were charred to death when a major fire broke out in a tenement in Sahyog Nagarf slum in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi shortly before midnight, four NCP activists — including three brothers — were electrocuted at Kalwa on Sunday morning when they came in contact with a live high tension wire.
In the first incident, a major fire, apparently triggered by a short-circuit, broke out in a 10x10 ft tenement of Guptas living in Sahyog Nagar slum, while the family members were sleeping. The fire engulfed the entire tenement after the blaze spread to a few kerosene cans in the house.
Four children, identified as Priya Mohanlal Gupta (12), her brother Nitesh (10), sister Preeti (7) and youngest Nitesh (7 months), were killed on the spot, while her another sister Riya (9) succumbed to injuries later in a local hospital on Sunday morning. Their motherother Sonkali Mohanlal Gupta (45) is undergoing treatment for her severe burns at a Bhiwandi hospital.
In an equally disturbing incident, four NCP activists —identified as Ashok Rajput (15), Annaya Rajput (22) Ajay Rajput (18 )and Pradeep Gullu Gupta (21), were electrocuted and eight others injured when they came in touch with a live HT wire at Kalwa, near Thane city.
The NCP activists were preparing to take out a procession for a local NCP candidate, Mahesh Salvi, when one of the activists carrying a part flag mounted onto an iron rod inadvertently high tension wire and received a shock. Others who were standing nearby went to his rescue. While three rescuers were also killed, eight others sustained severe wounds in the incident that took place at 11.30 am.
The killed Rajput brothers’ father, Raviraj Rajput, was among those who were injured. That was not enough, the deceased Rajput brothers’ mother, after hearing the news of her children’s death, tried to commit suicide by consuming poison. She was rushed to the local Chatrapati Shivaji hospital at Kalwa, where she is still being treated.
Following the electrocution incident, the leaders of various political parties met the Rajput brothers’ mother and family members of the injured. As a mark of respect to those killed, all political parties suspended their campaign for the February 16 Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) poll for a day.
