Focus on India at climate meet

Focus on India at climate meet
In a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday, Environment Ministers of Brazil, South Africa and China commended the role played by India in bringing equity back on the global climate negotiation platform. The three nations along with India form the BASIC group that undertakes joint climate change negotiations. The group is meeting here on Tuesday.

This is for the first time that Environment Ministers of the four emerging economies of BASIC countries are meeting again after the December summit in Durban, wherein differences among the partners had surfaced.

Ahead of his meeting with the visiting Environment Ministers of these countries, the Prime Minister said on Twitter that “Economic growth is essential for the people, but we cannot allow growth to be pursued in a manner which damages our environment”.

During his meeting with the Ministers, Singh stressed on the principle of equity and how equal per capita rights to the atmospheric space should be the goal of future negotiations on climate change, informed sources.

The New Delhi meeting of the BASIC group will discuss a united strategy for the group in the future negotiations on climate change and focus of the discussions would be the question of equity, sources said.

The meeting will also focus on working out a common and concerted strategy on the proposed new global climate change regime. The meeting will be watched closely to assess the future prospects of the group comprising the four emerging economies.

The four countries had differed on the question of the legal nature of the proposed global climate agreement during the climate change talks at Durban. China and India were ranged together, with both countries opposing a legally binding agreement.

Singapore, which has an observer status in BASIC, will also attend the ministerial meeting on climate change at the invitation of Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan.

Qatar and Swaziland will also attend a separate meeting of the Basic Plus nations during the two-day summit. Qatar is the host of the United Nations-sponsored climate talks COP 18 in December 2012.
