NCP has manifesto devoted to women

With the impending civic polls, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), in its bid to woo the votes of fairer sex, released their party manifesto dedicated to the women.

NCP city chief Vandana Chavan released the four-page leaflet dedicated to women-oriented programmes. The manifesto attempts to address issues such as safety, facilities for working women, special transportation system, economic empowerment and healthcare. Keeping in mind that half of the city’s population comprises women, NCP has prepared women-centric policies with various stakeholders. It has introduced an annual gender status report on the lines of the annual environmental status report for the city.

Addressing a Press conference, Vandana said the party decided to have a special women’s manifesto since there are a number of women’s issues in the city that need to be dealt with.

“Surveillance system for women’s safety and close circuit television cameras monitoring in public places, including subways, would be introduced. We are also contemplating the concept of alarm bells at public places and public telephone booths which will help women alert locals and passers-by if they are in trouble,” he added.

Chavan said the safety at workplace and housing societies will also be considered. “Surveillance systems at parking lots and elevators in public places and housing societies are part of the manifesto,” she added.

“The Domestic Violence Act has given women the strength to fight against violence. However, women need to be made aware about the Act, know the provisions of the Act, deal with issues apart from atrocities by husbands,” she said.

The party has also announced some healthcare schemes like medical check-up at subsidised rates, workshops to create awareness about various diseases, encouraging yoga, exercise classes and laughter clubs for women and to provide assistance of medical experts and voluntary organisations.
