Veteran Communist leader and president of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Promode Gogoi passed away here on Friday, following a brief illness. A bachelor, he was 82.
A member of the Central Secretariat and the National Executive of the Communist Party of India, Mr. Gogoi was Water Resources Minister during 1996-2001. He was one of the vice-presidents of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) and was re-elected to the CPI National Executive at the recent party congress held in Patna from March 27 to 31.
He was a Cabinet Minister in the Asom Gana Parishad-led coalition government headed by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. He was Assam CPI State secretary from 1975 to 1988 and had been a member of the Central Secretariat since 1975.
Mr. Gogoi was first elected to the Assam Assembly in 1967 from Sibsagar, and he won from the same constituency in 1972, 1978, 1991 and 1996. He had joined the CPI during the pre-Independence period while he was a Class IX student. Since then he had dedicated himself to building the Left movement in the State and worked relentlessly for peasants, workers, the poor and the downtrodden for over six decades.
Mr. Gogoi was admitted to a private hospital here on April 2 following nasal bleeding. The end came on Friday morning. The body was taken to his Beltola residence, then to the State CPI office and later to the Assembly premises. A large number of party workers and supporters and leaders of political parties and organisations paid their last respects to him. From the Assembly, the body was taken to Sibsagar town.
Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi described his death as an “irreparable loss” to Assam. The Chief Minister said the State would always remember the service he rendered for the poor and for its overall development.
Mr. Mahanta, AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary, CPI leaders Drupad Borgohain and Bhogeswar Dutta, BJP leader Siddhartha Bhattacharyya, intellectuals Hiren Gohain and Sibanath Barman and ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa were among those paid their homage. PCC chief Bhubaneswar Kalita mourned Mr. Promode Gogoi. The Assam State Committee of the CPI (Marxist) described his death as an irreparable loss to Left and democratic movement in the State.
