No place for violence: Jairam tells Maoists

Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has asked the Maoists to drop the gun and join the mainstream as “there is no place for violence in the land of Gautam Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi”. Ramesh was addressing a public gathering in Dumka on his two-day visit to the State.

“Doors are open for any rebel group willing to join the democratic process by contesting elections. There is no place for violence in the land of Buddha and Gandhiji,” Ramesh said on Sunday.

Expressing concern on the rise of extremism in Jharkhand, the Minister said that of 78 Maoist-affected districts in the country, 17 were in the State. The menace of terrorism could be tackled only through rapid progress, he said.

Ramesh visited several sericulture institutes run by women’s self help groups. He reiterated that all-round development work would help tribals in Jharkhand as over 10 lakh families which lost land to the state are yet to be rehabilitated.

Stressing on the need for 75 per cent reservation for women in tribal communities in different fields so that the development programmes could be sped up, Ramesh said that efforts should be made to direct 80 per cent profit to SHGs engaged in sericulture.

“At present, they are getting only 40 per cent profit due to presence of middlemen. The Central Silk Board and the State Government should ensure 80 per cent profit goes to silk SHGs,” he said.

Of 65,000 families involved in the sericulture business in the State, 10,000 are from Dumka district alone, added Ramesh.

He also announced that a plan has been passed by the Central Government to connect all hamlets having at least 250 people through pucca roads under PMGSY scheme.

Criticising the Arjun Munda Government in Jharkhand, Ramesh said that the State Government failed to complete the target of one lakh wells in the State under the MNREGA scheme.

Ramesh also said that, due to lack of will of the State Government, Naxalism has not yet been removed from the State. Terming development as the only respite against Naxalism, he added that the security forces are not the only solution to the problem as development, too, must take place.
