Naveen asks PM to relook at Minerals Resources Rent Tax

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday once again urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to personally review the issue of imposition of Minerals Resources Rent Tax (MRRT) on iron ore on account of supernormal profits being made by mining companies with reference to the refusal of the Union Mines Minister to levy the tax.

Patnaik, who is going to Delhi on Thursday to attend the May 5 meeting on the NCTC issue, is likely to raise this matter with the Prime Minister personally in the sidelines of the NCTC meeting.

Patnaik, who countered the letter of Union Mines Minister Dinsha Patel, told the Prime Minister to act immediately and ensure that the Union Government acts immediately on the issue of imposition of MRRT to be charged at 50 per cent of the surplus rent. The funds so generated should accrue to the State Government for investing in infrastructure and jobs and sharing the benefits with the community, majority of who are poor tribals, to give them a lasting stake in the prosperity of areas affected by mining, he said.
