Death sentence for Khushboo’s killer
The court of Judicial Commissioner SH Kazmi on Wednesday pronounced death sentence to 22-year-old Bijendra Kumar, who had beheaded a teenaged girl named Khushboo in broad daylight on April 27, 2011 at St. Xavier’s College campus in Ranchi.
Terming the case as rarest of the rare, the Judicial Commissioner pronounced hanging-till-death for the killer of Khushboo.
Looking upset for the first time after the incident, Bijendra was seen covering his face with a handkerchief while he was taken to the court. Bijendra alias Golu broke down in tears as soon as he was awarded death sentence by the Judicial Commissioner. He was totally disappointed after hearing the judgment. “This is not justice. One must go and ask her grandmother whether she had told truth in the court,” shouted Bijendra from the jail van. He had been trapped by the police and prosecution, added Bijendra when asked about the judgment.
During the argument on the quantum of the death sentence, the defence counsel pleaded for the possibility of Bijendra’s rehabilitation and referred to Article 21 of the Constitution which says that no person should be deprived of personal liberty.
This argument of the defence counsel was countered by the prosecution which reminded about the additional clause of Article 21which says the person should not be deprived by the personal liberty ‘except the procedure established by law.’ Turning down the arguments of the defence counsel, the court awarded death sentence to Bijendra.
“The court was satisfied with the arguments given by me and considering the case as rarest of the rare, awarded death sentence to Bijendra,” said the Public Prosecutor Brahmanand Sharma.
Sharma was happy about the judgment. “I am really happy to hear the judgment as we have succeeded to persuade the court for death sentence. This is a tribute to Khushboo that we have managed to complete the arguments within three months time,” added Sharma.
The relieved father of Khushboo thanked for the integrity shown by all including media, police and the advocates in the Court which helped in the conclusion of the case in a short period of time.
“I am thankful to all including the Senior SP, the investigating agencies, the college students and the media who stood by me all the time and made justice possible in a short period of time. We had full faith in the judiciary which was proved to be true in my case,” said Khushboo’s father Lal Maheshwar Nath Shahdeo. He was satisfied with the punishment given to the killer, added Shahdeo.
Although Bijendra’s father felt sorry for whatever happened to Khushboo, he was not ready to admit that his son had committed such a heinous crime.
“Have you seen my son killing Khushboo or anybody here had seen anything? The judgment had been given on the basis of the statements given by different persons,” said Bijendra’s father Raghunandan Prasad. He will decide later whether he will go to the higher court or not, added Prasad.
Khushboo was beheaded by Bijendra at St. Xavier’s College campus while she was coming out after writing her examin. She was to get married on May 27-- just a month later. According to Bijendra, an Engineering student, he met the girl in Jamshedpur where she used to stay with her maternal grandmother and fell in love. He claimed that they were to get married soon.
